The
Slow Food Movement
I am not alone. To my elation, I have discovered that there is an international movement gaining strength among "food preservationists." I thought this was a joke when I first heard about it, but I have since found out that it boasts over 60,000 members in thirty-five countries. Founded in Bra, Italy, in 1986, the Slow Food Movement is "the avant-garde response to the Fast Life which has changed our lives and threatens the environment and the landscape in the name of productivity." I accessed their website recently (www.slowfood.com). According to the Movement's founder, the aim of Slow Food is "to protect the historical, artistic and environmental heritage of traditional places of gastronomic pleasure." Here are a few more out-takes: "...common objective: to protect biodiversity and the right to taste"..."speed, the new obsession of the modern world...self-absorption of people too impatient to feel and taste, too greedy to remember what they have just devoured"..."It is possible to make Coca-Cola anywhere and in any quality, whereas mountain cheese can only achieve certain flavors if it is produced in a certain place following certain procedures and using certain skills, knowledge..." Give them a visit. Perhaps you'll want to join the movement. It starts in your kitchen. 6 of 7 [home]
